Power spikes are as unpredictable as the weather, but they do happen, most of the time without us realising it. But when we do suddenly find out what's happened it's often too late - your gear is fried and there's that sickening burnt plastic smell filling the room. Thankfully this kind of event is pretty rare, though we have dealt with a lot of insurance companies purchasing replacement gear for customers - so it does happen!

However, there is a much more common problem with the 240V supplied to your home, that is - it's not always 240V.

We've been asked my many customers how to tell if you need a Monster Power Power Board, and we've come up with a few suggestions. Any one of these is reason enough to invest in Monster Power, if you have more than one symptom, then it's a must have piece of equipment.

The Monster Power range also protect set top boxes with hard disks in them, which are prone to early failure due to the sensitive nature of the hard disk and related components.

So, how do the power boards typically minimise the most common voltage spikes? Your use of electricity is measured in watts, and on your power bill is expressed as Kw/h - or how many kilowatts you use each hour. This is usually a pretty constant number when everyone is out of the house, when you just have things like clock radios and the fridge running - then when everyone comes home your power usage increases as you start to turn on lights, computers, TV's etc. What causes the spikes is when you're all home and using a lot of electricity and then something big comes in and uses a large amount of power very quickly. This could be a microwave, or an air-conditioner starting it's cycle - these are very quick high wattage spikes which affect the power which can be supplied to all your other appliances.

It's these repetitive spikes which cause early equipment failure due to the drop and spike in voltage. Imagine you have a hose flowing at a constant rate, then you pinch it to cut off the water supply. When you release it, the water comes out a lot faster initially. It's similar with electricity. The voltage will increase. Monster Power units remove this excess voltage by diverting it to a ground wire, sending it safely to earth.

This means that all your expensive TV and HI-FI gear will never see another power spike again - and last a lot longer, happily running on a constant voltage.

Most of the Monster Power boards also have line filters which can be used with your telephone/modem or tv antenna - even your pay tv decoder. The phone line filter is probably the most important one, as most phones are connected directly to the street with no form of in line protection. This means that a high voltage incident out in the street makes it all the way to your head without so much as a fuse in the way. The same applies for some pay tv installations, though most have some rudimentary breaker in the box on the side of your house. The same cannot be said for your antenna though - which is a direct line from not only static but in rare instances lightning strikes. We've had to send out new digital tv receivers to a surprising number of customers who had their box fry due to lightning hitting their antennas - so it certainly happens!

With Monster Power boards, you're protected against all these things, for a fraction of the replacement cost of the items. Monster Cable will even guarantee anything you have connected to one of the Monster Power boards from $75,000 through to $350,000!
